_DSC5037Our team of Pediatric Surgeons at Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children at P/SL is world-renowned for pioneering minimally invasive surgery.

Using a tiny incision, a straw-sized video camera and miniature instruments, our pediatric surgeons pioneered the world's first minimally invasive repair of intestinal atresias, tracheoesophageal fistula, lung resections, and PDA ligations.

We also are the first hospital in the Rocky Mountains to offer fetal surgery and robotic surgery. Our Pediatric Surgeons performed diaphragmatic hernia surgeries on newborns using minimally invasive techniques. We have the world's largest series of fundoplications in neonates.

Our Pediatric Surgeons also offer one of the largest series of diaphragmatic hernia repair.

Minimally Invasive Surgery

Increasingly, minimally invasive treatments are often proving to offer patients:

  • Less pain
  • Less blood loss
  • Less scarring
  • Faster recovery
  • Shorter hospital stays

Members of the team provide consultation and comprehensive inpatient and outpatient surgical care for newborns - even extremely premature babies - as well as for infants and children.

Improving surgical techniques for newborns, children and teens has been undergoing a quiet revolution, led by the pediatric surgeons at Presbyterian/St. Luke's Medical Center, here in the heart of Denver. Our pediatric surgeons invented many of the new Minimally Invasive Surgical (MIS) techniques, and also have helped develop smaller, more precise instruments now used by surgeons worldwide.

Pediatric MIS Surgery entails operating in very small, very delicate structures. Newborns, children and teens are not just small adults. They have bodies that respond differently during surgery than adults-and they need customized, expert care. Computers and high resolution straw-sized video cameras have made seeing tiny structures inside a child's body easier. But MIS is more than gadgets.

Not every "minimally invasive" operation involves the use of fiber optic cameras and laparoscopic tools. Sometimes, a MIS procedure may only involve using a different kind of incision or other approaches intended to diminish the trauma the child experiences.
